SKY'S FOR FLYING
When the weight of her eyes fell upon me I flinched
And drew back my hand where my fingers had inched towards her thigh
She pinched me goodbye
And then took off running
I was a young man, a boy to speak true
I had no idea what my fingers could do
I was wrong
She knew all along
And loved me for learning
She was so lovely, I never knew how
She could look like an angel with mud on her brow like a crown
And how she lay down
And cooled me like water
And we make it up as we go along
And I avoid her eyes when things go wrong
I might lift her up where she don’t belong
From time to time

In the terrible silence that followed us home
I swore I would keep her and call her my own
She said Why?
I’ve shown you the sky
But that isn’t flying
