CAULDER RUN

I’ve been crashed out on the beach

Just beyond the water’s reach

Dreaming that it washes me away

I can hear it rolling in

And whispering away again

It gets a little closer every day

There’s a story I was told

When I was just a few days old

Of a beggar born to be a king

He cursed the best and blessed the meek

But from what I’ve seen the weak

Don’t inherit much of anything

Caulder Run, Caulder Run

In the garden grows a gun

And a rose that cuts as deep as any thorn

Caulder Run, Caulder Run

Take a teaspoon or a ton

I’ve been running since the day that I was born

I give as much as I can take

Bend as much as I can break

Don’t mistake the forest for the pines

Breathe the breath that’s given me

Carve myself a wishing tree

Rake the coals and read between the lines

I do my best to sing the song

The ones before me passed along

Remember every note that I forget

I’ll try to sing it like I did

Back when I was just a kid

Change the words and tune as I see fit

Caulder Run, Caulder Run

All the damage that is done

Leaves a broken bath like cattle in the corn

Caulder Run, Caulder Run

Guess I’m not the only one

Who’s been running since the day that I was born

I’ve been running from the day

From time to time my knees might bend

I light a candle now and then

But mostly I believe in what I see

All the good books that we read

Won’t save us from what lies ahead

And what we leave behind won’t set us free

Caulder Run, Caulder Run

I will stare into the sun

Until the night will shine as bright as any morn

Caulder Run, Caulder Run

Catches up with everyone

Keeps us running from the day the we are born

Keeps us running from the day
